Refractories are materials that decompose by heat, pressure or chemical erosion and are retained at high strength and form temperatures. Refractories are polycrystalline, polyphase, inorganic, nonmetallic, porous and heterogeneous. They are usually composed of oxides or non-oxides (such as carbides, nitrides, etc.) of the following materials: silicon, aluminum, magnesium, calcium, and zirconium. Some metals with melting points > 1850°C, such as niobium, chromium, zirconium, tungsten, tantalum, etc., are also considered refractory materials.
